SNAP! orlando opens today, ya'll! this four day long photography extravaganza will exhibit works at numerous downtown orlando venues by both established, emerging and local artists. check out the SNAP! site for a list of venues and events.

one of the many highlights is HELLO FROM FLORIDA curated by jen o'malley. HELLO FROM FLORIDA will be on view at gallery at avalon island (may 20 - june 11) and will feature photographs of our beloved sunshine state with works by 14 artists. the opening reception is tonight and will showcase regionally inspired goodies courtesy of honest fare.

orlando was featured in today's city guide for design*sponge with photos by my bestie, jen o'malley. i lived in orlando for about six years and i often miss the quaintness, the community, the people and of course, most of all, stardust.

anyone who thinks of orlando as disney does not know orlando. disney is actually in kissimmee and is 30 minutes from downtown orlando. if you ever have a chance to visit the real orlando i promise you will not be disappointed.

i love me some ballet flats! i just can't have enough of them. i have so many pairs and still i want more. the time has come, my friends...i must own a pair (or two, or three, or...) of repetto ballet flats. i have always loved how incredibly cute they are and while reading up on their history i learned of their connection to the sexy, sultry french actress, brigitte bardot.

long story short, in the 1950s rose repetto created the iconic BB ballet flat for miss bardot.

ok, so i know brigitte bardot can be totally extreme with her racial slurs (i mean she does have 5 convictions!) and animal rights protests and all, but there is no denying her influence on the sexual revolution. at a time when women were to sit comfortably in their roles as quiet housewives bardot attended the 1953 cannes film festival in a bikini! this is one of the reasons why i love the earlier years of brigitte bardot and her effortless french style. je ne sais quoi...je ne sais quoi!

today the Hubble Telescope celebrates 20 years in space! named after the American astronomer edwin powell hubble, it has been called one of the greatest achievements in science. it orbits Earth every 96 minutes, 360 miles above the Earth's surface and has taken images of galaxies over 12 million light years away. i am in awe of the images taken by the Hubble, as i am sure most are.

finally, a vegetarian restaurant in WPB! and...it's actually good! darbster, named after the owners' dog, darby, is definitely worth checking out. the palm cakes are of my favorites on the menu and nelson loves the tempeh reuben, but really anything we've tried has been delightful. the casual patio dining is relaxing after a long day and the staff is super friendly. also, dogs are welcome!

as i am preparing to start my very first vegetable garden next month i am filling up with inspiration from the amazing alice waters. alice waters is THE champion of fresh, organic, locally grown foods. she is the founder of the famed chez panisse in berkeley, ca (of course...why do i live in wpb?!?!) as well as the edible schoolyard and slow food international. ummm, she's pretty much...amazing! miss waters has been promoting ingredients that are produced sustainably and locally for nearly forty years. please enjoy the 60 minutes story on her...and check out her amazing kitchen!!!

fun food side note: when i told my mom that i don't make my own sauce she was horrified. "how could you not make your own sauce?!?" she exclaimed. "i mean, it's not like i just open a jar and that's it. i open a jar and then add veggies and seasonings to make it my own," i answered. well, this was just unacceptable in her eyes and apparently my grandmother is now rolling over in her grave! so, i'm headed over to mom's tomorrow to have a lesson in the homemade sauce that has been passed down to her from her mother from her mother's mother and so on...you know how us italians can be.

i recently started a collection of wooden spoons and spatulas. i love them for all kitchen tasks that require any kind of mixing, folding, tossing, serving and spanking. ;) i say every kitchen needs at least two. when i asked my mother to keep an eye out for quality wooden spoons she replied (with her sarcastic ny flare): "yeah danes, it's at the top of my list!" thanks ma!

here in WPB it's not every day that i meet talented young people that actually spark my interest. so when i met ben mendelewicz at dreyfoos high school's booth at the PB3 fair i was in awe. ben just graduated and of course is moving on to bigger and better things outside of the ever so exciting PB county. good for him! nelson and i are lucky enough to own two of his works and we hope to continue to support him throughout the years. let's just hope he doesn't fuck up and suck down the road!

For many, the apron represents the stereotypical housewife of the 1940s and 50s, but long before aprons were thought of as a functional piece of the wardrobe. They were used to carry essential kitchen utensils, for gathering and carrying eggs and for transporting kindling wood. Aprons were not only used in the household kitchen and on the family farm. Butchers, welders and bakers have always used aprons to protect both their clothing and bodies from their work.

Ever since I was a little girl I loved to wear an apron. My grandma Annie would bring me into the kitchen, tie one around my waist and put me to work...or at least to observe. Her kitchen was where my love of cooking began. I must admit, I am a messy cook and I have a habit of wiping my hands on whatever is on my body at that time. I have begun making my own aprons for myself and my dearest of friends. I am excited about them. They are pretty and functional.

I attended the Norton Museum of Art's photography auction and was able to bid on a piece for a client...pretty exciting. It was my first time bidding and I was extremely nervous. However, it was not the work I would have been fighting for. I came across a beautiful yet haunting photograph by Michal Chelbin and have yet to get the image off of my mind.

the papaya tree and the property line

Yesterday it came to my attention that there is a beautiful papaya tree bearing fruit on the other side of the fence that divides the property between me and my east side neighbor. Ready to be picked and drenched with fresh squeezed lemon, (I will thank Gabi for that one), two of these luscious fruits were hanging over the property line and into our yard. What was I to do? Are they ours? Do I go with my instinct and climb up the fence and just take them? Do I go on over, risk the dreaded small talk and ask if I can have them? What if they themselves love papaya and want them? Do they know about the lemon? Well, I guess we could share them? Do I have lemons at the house? I decided to sleep on it and leave the taste of fresh papaya lingering on my mind.

I would like to think of myself as one who is as neighborly as they come, but I was beginning to have my doubts. This feeling of uncertainty left a sour taste in my mouth which I was sure could only be cured with the freshest of papayas. I am more than capable of engaging in polite conversation and above all, sharing a couple of papayas!

This morning arrived and to my surprise the papayas were gone. I couldn't help but wonder if it were in fact my neighbors who cut them down or if someone who had less right than I did took them. If it were my neighbors did they see me eyeing the fruit and have the same dilemmas as I? And if they did and decided to take the papayas all to themselves just what kind of "neighbors" do I have?

I just hope they know about the lemon.

It has taken me almost two years to appreciate West Palm Beach, the city in which I currently reside. My neighborhood, Grandview Heights, is one of the many reasons I am finally content in this strange paradise.

Grandview Heights is one of 13 historic districts located in the City of West Palm Beach. The name Grandview Heights is derived from the neighborhood’s location atop the Atlantic Ridge just south of Okeechobee Boulevard. Once upon a time residents with two story homes could see the beautiful Atlantic Ocean over the island of Palm Beach from their second floor windows.
